Leaving comfort zone, help!

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello, all. I'm hoping someone can throw some options my way. I've been an ICU nurse since graduating from nursing school nearly 6 years ago (will be 6 years in May) and almost 5 of those years in the unit I am currently working. My husband was just offered a promotion at work in another large city about 3 hours away and I feel like he will be accepting the position. I'm thinking that while I'll be leaving my comfort zone of familiar hospital/coworkers/unit, I may like to try venturing out into another area non-nursing related. What I'd like to know is, what are some non-clinical avenues I could take? Someone recently mentioned pharmaceutical sales, so along those lines, any suggestions? Not necessarily sales, but a job where my nursing background could be utilized? Thanks!

You could try to get into clinical trials as a nurse monitor. You could go into insurance and do a number of different things like utilization review, case management, etc. You could do these things for a hospital if they have these areas. Usually teaching hospitals offer a number of non-bedside opportunities like nurse researcher and the others I mentioned.
