Nursing Care Plan for TPN patient?

Published

I am writing a care plan for a patient with a perforated duodenal ulcer who is currently on TPN and IVABS. The ulcer is not being operated on but allowed to heal with no aggravation - hence the TPN.

Nursing diagnoses do my head in and I was hoping for some help!

So far I have

- Risk for infection related to TPN

- Imbalanced nutrition (less than body requirements) related to TPN

- Deficient knowledge related to drug therapy

I then have to discuss nursing interventions and rationales. I just wanted some help as to whether I'm on the right track or none of this makes sense.

Thanks.

The imbalanced nutrition one....it isn't really related to the TPN, you are using the TPN to treat the imbalance.

The risk for infection is good.

Think about where it is metabolized and the problems there, is this long term or short term?

Your knowledge def. could be a little more in depth, like related to TPN use, be more specific in your diagnosis.

You need to have ones related to your main problem also, like I said, TPN is part of the treatment right now.
