Nursing approach (Health Assessment)

Published

As nurses, you may feel anxious about examining the genitalia of patients. How are you going to approach the patient when you, as the RN, are uncomfortable? How will you overcome your anxiety? What if you come across the unexpected during an exam such as, an unusual tattoo or piercing? What if your patient also presents with a sexually transmitted infection(STI)? How will you approach this nurse-patient discussion, and what potential issues regarding confidentiality will you consider?

Are these interview questions for a homework assignment?

I am trying to gather more information regarding these topics. For examining the genitalia of patients, if I feel uncomfortable, I would offer a chaperone, avoid unexpected or sudden movements and wear gloves. And for patient's confidentiality, I would keep patient draped for privacy. Any other ideas would be very appreciated.
