I am a psychiatric nurse for a clinic where we provide mental health services . We serve adult and adolescents. I was recently put in an uncomfortable situation and I would like to address it to see what are our legal rights as nurses when it comes to these type of situations.
So, I was assigned an adol client, this client had to go to hospital. Once LA fire and transportation arrived, we the staff were informed that someone from the facility had to go with the client since they are a minor. This is something I never had to do. And we could not reach their legal guardian. Nobody wanted to go so for the sake of the client getting medical treatment I accompanied, however I made it known at the hospital that I was not their legal guardian nor was I signing anything nor making any medical decisions for client. I left hospital only to find out the hospital called the facility requesting someone had to be there present.
I wrote an email to my supervisors regarding the incident but haven't heard back from them. Are we legally required to go per LA fire's request? Is this within our scope of practice as an LVN? I don't feel comfortable doing something like this again without knowing my legal rights.
