Hello All,
I am an aspiring nurse. My reasons for being a nurse come from watching my mother lose her battle against breast cancer. I want to become more informed of health care and I want to make a difference. I recall sitting in the waiting room while my mom was in ICU and a sweet nurse came up to me and said "everything will be okay, I understand". The truth of the matter was, she didnt understand, her mom was still alive. When i get my degree I can be walking proff to the next little girl in the waiting room, that things will eventually be okay.
Before I keep goin on with my lifes stories, my real reason of being her right now is because i need help with a nursing essay. The questions asks " briefly describe your understanding of the nursing profession, including nursing responsibilites, requiste knowelge and skills. include why u want to be a nuse in todays society, as we experiance major changes in health care.
I dont want you to think i am a ''cheater" i just need some inspiration from those of you out there to get my own ideas rolling. What i am really torn on, is the last sentence asking about today's society?? What does that mean.
With my application I have included a personal essay explaining my mom's story and my true inspiration in becoming a nurse. This essay question is going beyond my personal reasons, soo please please please help a lil' student out.
thanks so much
Sincerely, Allie

Allie,
Hi I am an RN with 20 yrs of experience and have worked in 3 different states as well in various hospital-based settings. I also have over 7 yrs of Oncology
experience where I did direct patient care, chemo and internal radiation, pain
management, and and lots of end of life type care and support to both my patients as well as their families. At the time I was doing that there a death in my family(the passing of my father-not from cancer though) towards the end of my time in Oncology. I was very good, compassionate, and empathetic to all of my patients, their families, and fellow staff as well. The nursing profession to me is professionals like myself and others giving care and assistance to our fellow humans in their times of need using an established nursing process, utilizing a central core of knowledge gained first in school and then continued throughout our careers. I also feel that nursing is individualized to each nurse as we take our base education, add our own unique personalities, and that makes my practice different from yours and everyone else's. Why I want to be a nurse in today's society is because I feel that our values have and are changing, people like us are a unique commodity in that we care about others in a time when a lot of other people do not, and care only about themselves and their own. If we don't do this, then who will??? Man could go the way of the dinosaurs and just die off otherwise. Don't know how others feel, but this is my answer and I'm sticking to it. Good luck with school and future career. Hope this helps a little. Take care..... flaerman :)
