Med-surg encompasses such a broad range of diseases (see: just about anything!) that it'd be difficult to have a nurse who only does patient education (civilian RNs, please chime in if I'm wrong here!).
That's why nurses in general are supposed to be knowledgeable enough to teach their patients themselves... y'know, good old-fashioned care plan tailored to the patient and educational/teaching points to compliment the plan and help the patient attain realistic goals.
There are nurse educator specialists that are sub specialty like diabetes and renal
Correct, but that's not typically a role for an inpatient nurse. You'd see those kinds of specialists working more so in clinics than on med-surg.
