Nurse Shadows

Hi, I'm a male pre-nursing student at GPC. I will be shadowing an ER nurse (it's what I think I want to do) at Northside Hospital in two weeks. It's an opportunity that I'm excited to have, however I am a bit anxious about the prospect of following a nurse around for 4 hours.

Are there any nurses here that have had students shadow them? And if so, what can you say about the experience? Likewise, are there any students who have shadowed a nurse? How would you describe your experience?

Thanks!

I'm with you. I'll be at St. Joseph's for my shadowing experience. I'm extremely excited, but I wish I knew what to expect. I quess I'll find out soon.

I do think that I'm very blessed that GPC will give us this opportunity along with the new online Drug Calculation class prior to being accepted into the program.

Well, I suppose I'll see you in class, and we can share our experiences.

I am not from GA, but loved your post. I shadowed a NICU nurse once and didn't want to leave when my time was up! When I first got there, I talked to the nurse to see how she felt about me asking questions and/or me touching anything. (I had CNA experience and wanted to help out.) We made a deal: I could ask her all the questions I wanted, but don't touch anything unless asked. I learned so much that day. Have fun and enjoy it. Just stay out of the way and you'll be fine.
