nurse residency program, low gpa acceptable?

Published

hi all, i am a recent new grad and is applying for the vandabilt Summer cohort 2010 and was wondering what they really look for, and my biggest concern is that they look at your GPAs and mine is very low, it is less than a 3.0. Should i continue to apply for it or should i give up because vandy probably won't even look at my application. also i have no work experience relating to nursing. i really want to get into the new grad program at vandy. thank you to anyone who reply.

not sure about that specific program, but in my experience, if they are interested in GPA they will post that in the job description. Most are looking for a 3.0 or 3.5+

Specializes in One day CCU maybe!.

I would still apply unless it specifically states a minimum GPA. I know many less than 3.0'ers that got hired this month from my school. However, with that being said I think sometimes they know certain schools have tougher grading scales.

I would hope that people would realize a GPA really doesn't add up to a hill of beans. Some people really are better test takers than others while clinically they may not be doing as well. I'm a little biased of course. ;) My school makes it difficult to make an A. For the first two semesters we didn't have anyone make an A. I made one C and all B's. (And my GPA is actually average for my class) However, in the end our school has a 100% pass rate on first attempt of the NCLEX. I believe it has everything to do with the tough grading system.

Also, our valedictorian has a 3.5. The year before the valedictorian had a 3.0. YIKES! I mean these are people that came in with a 4.0. Sooooo, I hope that recruiters and hiring managers consider this.

If you don't apply you won't get the job anyway. So how could you be worse off for applying?
