Although I was born an American I am and will always be English in my heart. I desperately miss England. I would also like my intact boys to grow up with their "own kind". Isn't that horrible? But I am sooo appalled at the circ rate in the US.
I am a BSN student nurse in Phoenix, AZ. And for a person who likes rainy, cold, dreary days it is horrible. We are in the 90's today and it is just barely spring. I am planning on returning to England ASAP. I have a great support network over there of some friends whom I have remained close too. I am also married with 3 kids. After completing my BSN I want to become a Certified Nurse Midwife or a NP. Midwifery is my first love but over here it is a high malpractice area. Is it the same in the UK? It wasn't when I was there but I know things change. I am also interested in NP or health visitor. Is it better to get my MSN in Midwifery or NP here or over there? Can NP and helath visitors prescribe meds? Can MW's? Next to MW, I would love to be an A&E NP. Do NP's practice in A&E?
any info is much appreciated.

Hi there,
I've just read your message and thought I'd drop you a line.
I live in the UK and I'm currently working as a nurse practitioner (NP) dealing with minor injuries and illnesses.
If I'm honest I'd say the way forward in nursing over here is with being an NP.
You can train and be an NP in almost anything!
Working in Walk in centres, minor injury units Emergency room etc.
The pay ( especially with BSc) is not bad at all. About £24-26000 per year.
As I said about the future of nursing, its probalbly coming from the states any, as most things do!
The world is your oyster, so they say and you really could choose any speciality in nursing and get a job easy enough. Their is a shortage of nurses here like most parts of the world. Including midwifery. Just look at which parts of the UK you wish to work. London are desperate!! But housing costs a fortune and I mean a fortune, but the rates of pay, particularly via an agency such as Mayfair, Thornbury etc pay well!! They also give you guidance about paying less UK tax by going through specific tax companies ( so you'll be self-employed).
At present in the Uk we are about to undergo new changes to our pay. The RCN have proposed "Agenda for change". As nurses you'll be paid by your level of responsibility not who you are or where you work, so hopefully that s good news for us who are not being paid correctly.
I work in the Isle of Man, an island just off the UK (between England and Ireland) look on a map. Here we pay less tax than the UK so it all helps!!
Good luck
write again if you think I can help!
Diane.
