?-Nurse Administration

Published

Hi,

Do any of you out there have a Masters in Nursing Administration?

Would you mind telling me a bit about what you do?

THANKS!

I have nearly completed an MSN in Administration. I'm not exactly sure what I'll do when I'm done, but I can tell you that the degree makes you more eligible/desireable for positions such as Director of Nursing or Chief Nursing Officer. The concentration in leadership and business planning is important for this type of position. I'm currently a unit Manager, the courses I've taken have given me a better grasp of fiscal planning and management, leadership skills, staffing, etc. So even if I don't choose to advance in the hierarchy, I'm still better prepared to do what is required in my current position.

Hello:

To answer your question. I do not have a Masters in Nursing Admin but I do have a Masters plus two certifications in nursing administration.

I have worked in several types of admin positions and am currently a DON. It is a very tough and often thankless job. In order to be successful at doing the position you must be free to devote yourself to the job especially when you are first trying to establish your reputation.

I don't know how old you are or what your family situation is but I can tell you that most of the people I know who had young kids have had difficulty with the position. I could not do it without a lot of support from my husband.

The hours are not 9 to 5. I often have erratic hours. I need to stay late or go in early to meet with staff or deliver a program and so on.

My duties include managing staffing, maintaining my budget, disciplinary actions. I also sit on committees. I am involved in making decisions and setting policy for the nursing department.

I hire, fire, orient, and ensure that the facility is in compliance with State and Federal regulations. If that type of thing appeals to you- join our ranks.

hi,

how long have you worked as a floor nurse before going back to get your degree?

is it practical to think that i could do my bsn in nursing and then do my masters in nursing admin right away?

thanks for your advice!

I have my Masters Degree in Health Care Administration. I decided to get my degree in this area rather then in Nursing Administration so I could do overall administration rather than just nursing administration. I have been the manager of the psychiatric department of a hospital and was the administrator of a psychiatric hospital.

and do you enjoy your job?????
