2015 is the 50th anniversary since the inception of the Nurse Practitioner role. 50 years before, no one would have thought of an expanded role for nurses as primary care providers. 50 years later, our presence has grown to not just primary care settings but also acute care and mental health settings across all age groups. 50 years later, 21 states and the District of Columbia recognize nurse practitioners as independent providers with expertise based on their training. There have been struggles along the way and there are still much work to be done but the last 50 years have definitely been a proud moment for all of us!
