Np???

Dear all,

I'd like to know what is the Actual role of NP and specialy Oncology NP. Since I am new Clinicla coordinator Nurse in King Hussein Cancer Center in jordan, where this title (CCN) is nothing of simulation of NP and CNS becuse there are no subspeciality as NP or CNS in jordan. i read about it in internet. But i do not have a good idea about it. Can you help me please.

I don't know about the oncology specialty but I'll try to give you my interpretation of a nurse practitioner.

A nurse practitioner is a clinician who can see patients just as a doctor does...in other words evaluating and treating patients for illness. Nurse practitioners in the U.S. can write prescriptions for medication for thier patients. NP's work under the general supervision of a doctor, although in practice the doctor is more of an associate and a source of deeper understanding for when the NP needs help.

Doctors and nurses are different in that NP's work from nursing theory....looking at the whole person and how they create health or disease in thier body. Doctors obviously go to school longer and have more training but they work from a different model of care as well. Doctors tend to focus on the ailing part, to the exclusion of the rest of the person.

Most NP's now are getting Master's degrees and usually hae some time as a regular nurse under thier belt before moving into the role of clinician.

As for an oncology specialty......that may fall under the heading of Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. ACNP focus on emergent or acute conditions and have had training or classes to prepare them for this discipline.n

These are just the basics but I hope they help.

I've always wanted to go to Jordan. I'm in the process of learning Arabic and am hoping to visit/work there after I get my NP degree.

Good luck.
