Hi All,
Moved from NY to CAL. Applied and received RN & NP licenses, but no Furn # or DEA #.
Never had DEA # in NY, as worked part time w physician and used his Rx pads. Worked less than 5 yrs req for Cal Furn #, and Graduated in 2007 (adv pharm course, over 5yr req'mt). Currently no job. Tried to ask Cal BORN but no replies. Web site does not answer question.
How do I get Furn #? Can I, should I apply anyway?
Thanks for your help.

Here we go again, lol. Yes, that California Furnishing License (NPF) application is such an enigma to new applicants even those who are local. I am once an out of state NP who went through all the hassles of California's NP requirements. Here's what I suggest:
Yes, you should apply for a California Furnishing Number, without that, you can't write prescriptions.
To apply, you need to fill out certain sections of the form and pay the fee: http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/applicants/npf-app.pdf
** The form requires that the Director of your NP program fill out the Advanced Pharmacology Course Verification, not you. That's all you need to send. However, I would indicate somewhere in your application (via a separate letter, for example), that you have not practiced as an NP for more than 5 years so you are not required to submit the other documents, include a CV if you wish.
** You need to include in your application a copy of your NY NP license and a copy of NY's regulations on NP prescribing (just print it off the internet, that's what I did).
You will receive a Furnishing License after this is reviewed and approved by the BRN.
However, be aware that this furnishing license does not permit you to prescribe controlled substances yet.
** In order to get that privilege, you need to get a DEA and submit a copy of it to the BRN along with you NPF application. Also, you need to show proof that you have attended a California BRN-approved Continuing Education course on controlled substances. A course is available through the California Association for Nurse Practitioners for a fee via this link: http://canpweb.org/education/controlled-substance-ii/
Good luck.

Good luck! I sent in my Furnishing Number application materials 8 weeks ago. I called today as I have not heard anything back, and my check hasn't even been depostied ,and was told that they are not currently answering any questions about furnishing numbers. When I told them I just wanted to make sure it was received the operator said "You can't expect them to find your application and process it when there are others ahead of yours." I explained that I had made absolutely no indication that I had requested such a thing anad how was I supposed to know if I needed to resend this application. She told me she had already answered my questions, refused to give me her name, and hung up on me.
Just in need of some venting, thanks for listening!
