NP Houston Salary/outlook/relocating

Published

Looking to relocate to Houston from Chicago after I graduate from NP school. Been an RN for 10 years. I work in oncology and am studying AGNP with oncology speciality.

What are starting salaries for oncology NPs?

How hard is it to get licensed for both RN and NP in TX?

I've heard negative things about practicing in TX, but my husband and I have lots of family there and I love TX.

Chicago/IL is very liberal with their NP regulations but I prob will start practicing in TX so I won't know the difference.

TX is one of the most restrictive states in terms of NP practice - mandatory face to face meetings every month with your delegating physician, mandatory monthly chart reviews, unable to prescribe any schedule II medications unless you work in a specific inpatient setting, unable to prescribe medications that your delegating hasn't given you written permission to prescribe, and so on. Oh and always have a contract with a backup delegating, if your primary delegating gets hit by a bus you will not be able to legally practice until you contract with a new physician. If you want to go into private practice expect to hand over 30-40+% of your billing to your delegating for the "privilege" of practicing in the great state of Texas. If you want to learn more about supervisory regulations here's a link to the TMA's rules.
