I am a student nurse and I became fortunate enough to recieve a chance to be a pulmonary research assistant in the emergency dept. @ Northwestern. The commute is such a hassle, I wanted to utilize this opportunity to network and build up my resume. Northwestern is on the top of my lists of hospitals to apply and work for after graduation. I heard that their hiring process is highly selective. Do you think the HR will take into consideration that I devoted two years of volunteer work at NWM when I apply? Or will they just disregard that? By the way i was wondering if NWM has a nurse externship program. Are they in need of LPNs? And what is the starting pay for LPNs? Thank you for your time.

Hello,
I suggest that it isn't the HR that is so selective but that they are more stuck in quicksand. If you are intersted in the position I highly, highly, suggest that you contact the manager of the department to share your resume with her along with a cover letter. It would be best to do it in a non-intrusive manner. Possilby send a letter, or phone message first, introducing yourself as a applicant/candidate who has applied with HR already and asking permission to send her/him a copy of your credentials.
NMH's HR is notorious for being slllllllooooooooow. They need a call from someone to get the head's up.

p.s. I am a recently resigned, (only til I complete my degree) employee who loved working for them but, didn't have the time for 12 hour full time overnight shift while a full time grad student

In addition to Gennaver's suggestion, please consider asking the manager for whom you are volunteering to write a letter of recommendation and forward it directly to the managers of the units which interest you.
Thank you so much for the advice.
