Northwest Shoals Community College or Calhoun?

Hello all,

I am currently living in Colorado, but I was born and raised in AL and thinking of moving back to go to nursing school there. Nursing school is a mess out here, 3-5 year waitlists at public schools (even for LPN!!) and extremely expensive for the private schools. So... I am going to apply to Northwest Shoals Community College and Calhoun. Who all has applied to those schools and been accepted? Was it really hard to get accepted? How many points do you have to have? I'm not familiar with a points-based system, so maybe some of you could tell me how it works. :) :nurse: Thank you!

hey tsalsgicara,

I just got accepted at Calhoun for the LPN program. I got in with 150 points out of 170 total. I heard that it was really hard to get in to any nursing program at Calhoun but I think it is probably easier to get into the LPN program, cause I got in and was 20pts shy of perfect, but I had a 3.8 gpa and had already taken some of the classes. The points system works like this: You get a certain amount of points for certain classes you have already taken and the grade you got in that class ( 30 pt. for an A 20pt. for a B and 10pt. for a C), you get a certain amount of points form your compass reading exam and the last 11 points I'm not sure but I think you get those for already being a Calhoun student with a decent GPA. Here is a link to the exact site that tells you step by step. Hope this helps:)http://www.calhoun.edu/distance/Internet/Hped/Nursing/PNpackage.pdf

Thanks! I'll look into it, especially their delayed progression RN degree, since a lot of it is done online. That's cool.

How about anyone from Northwest Shoals Community College? How hard is it to get into their RN program? Anyone starting their this fall, and if so, y'all got room for one more? :) Also -- does Shoals start a group every Fall and Spring, or is it just every Fall semester? Thanks!

Hey yes it is very competitive. I start LPN at NWSCC next month. I was alternate 35 for the ADN program. They have seen girls with extremely high GPA's not get in. They also only admit during the fall. Same with LPN. I have heard Calhoun is more competitive due to the fact it is one of the best CC adn programs in the Huntsville/Decatur area. GOOD LUCK!
