north carolina makes progress in addressing the nursing shortage
a new report by the north carolina center for nursing, north carolina trends in nursing education: 2003 – 2005, shows that nursing education programs in the state continue to turn away more than half of the qualified students seeking admission, but the number of new students being enrolled for the first time increased by 14 percent overall between 2003 and 2005. baccalaureate degree programs in colleges and universities increased new admissions for registered nurse (rn) students by 32 percent - twice the national rate of increase. associate degree programs have not been able to increase admissions as quickly, rising by only 10 percent. by comparison, the national rate of increase for associate degree programs in nursing was 28 percent. north carolina programs educating licensed practical nurses (lpns) had a 24 percent increase in new admissions from 2003 – 2005.
