So I was just suspended pending investigation. Basically on our board for the day we had 20 of the same case, and I brought back patient B first before patient A because patient B was on the board in about 2hours before patient A even though A was actually scheduled first for surgery. It was a mistake, absolutely, but at the same time we were set up for the same case with the same doctor and when I pointed it out and discussed it with my boss and the doctor, they decided to go forward with the surgery since patient A wasn't ready yet anyways. I filled out a report and then was called into my bosses office where he told me I was suspended pending investigation. He told me he gets the feeling that I am not taking the issue very seriously because I was not worried about the situation (which is not the case, I am just very straight forward) and that they had everything they needed from me and that they would call me. He expects a 3 day suspension, but told me he didn't know how long it really could be, what I could expect, when they would call, or anything else. I don't really know what to do, as I want to be a great nurse and I want to learn from the situation, and I even have a suggestion as to how to keep this from ever happening again, but I don't know that I will ever even get the chance now to state my case.
On a side note, the exact same thing happened with 2 other nurses over the past year, and they didn't get suspended, write-ups, or anything. This is my first time to be written up or anything and I also feel like I am being used as an example now. I just got home and couldn't wait, so I called my boss and I asked my boss about that, he said that to their knowledge this has never happened before, and when I told him about the time it did happen he said "that was different."
I'm upset, nervous, scared, and my fear is driving me a mile a minute. What should I do or say when they call? What should I do or say if they terminate me? Any help is appreciated.
