Is it common for NNP and/or PNP to do the normal newborn exams in the hospital? A good friend had a baby last night and we were hanging out in L&D. I'm interested in being an NNP, but I think that I'd even like the normal newborn nursery from time to time. They had a Neonatologist in the hospital who attended the birth and did the exam (nothing wrong, I guess he was just the default pediatrician in house at night...) and a regular pediatrician who came by again in the morning. I was just wondering if that is common among APNs? My local school has a PNP and NNP program and the difference is only a few classes. I was thinking that might be something that I'd like to do one day.

Where I used to work, the pediatric residents and fellows did the well-baby assessments. I am sure that in some hospital systems, especially rural, nonteaching hospitals, NNP/PNP's are utilized in that role. Best of luck in your quest to become an APN!
