NICU nurse to FNP???

OK here goes...I have been a Level III NICU nurse for about 8 years, don't get me wrong I love the NICU, but I NEED a change. I have always wanted to pursue an advanced practice degree, but I don't want to be a NNP or PNP, due to limitations of age group. I want to work in a clinical setting with teens moms, teen families and young adults because I love providing patient education and teaching. I also want to eventually establish a teen clinic (long-term goal).

I am somewhat hesitant to apply to an FNP program because of my experience limited to one area, but in my heart this is what I want to do. I would also have to revisit adult care, which I don't mind. My mantra is to get through clinicals and learn what I need to learn. I will finish up with my BSN next month from an online program. The University of Cincinnati (good program ???) provided some information about their FNP program. I was advised by an enrollment counselor, I could still be a fit for the program because of my years experience and the fact that I care for the family unit. Looked at Frontier...shoot, I have basically looked at every online FNP program I could find.

Just wanted some sound and realistic advice (thanks in advance). I am in my late 30"s with a family, working part-time for the past couple of months to finish up school. I want to finish an FNP program (online) before the big 40...and while I am still motivated :typing

Go for it!!! We have all kinds of nurses in my FNP program at Frontier and we are all doing just fine :D In my class alone we have 2 or 3 NICU/Nursery RNs.

A good FNP program (online or in a classroom) is going to teach you what you need to be taught and get you prepared to practice as a good, safe FNP when you graduate regardless of your RN experience.

Thanks for the support. I called Frontier yesterday and OMG, the representative I spoke with was so helpful. She basically told me the same information in your post. I know this is premature, but I already wrote my personal goals statement and the letter concerning grad school and current family life (both req for app..which u already knew :-) I hope to be Class 75 Frontier bound!!!
