NICU or MED/SURG!! ...HELP?!?!?

Published

Hi all!!! .....

ok so i just graduated from nursing school with my BSN!! ....I absolutely love the NICU, Psych, and ER!! ....I have had two offers already ...one for the NICU new grad program and one for psych med/surg new grad program!! ....I am completely lost on what to pick ...I don't have the details yet for the NICU but it is full time and I'm pretty sure it will be nights ...the Psych med/surg floor is also full time but I actually got day shift which I am so happy about!! ....my problem!!! ...I have no idea what to pick ...I mean I loved the NICU and but I loved psych as well, and probably about equal amounts ...I am leaning more towards the psych med/surg positon because the hospital told me after a year I can transfer to any floor I want and I think starting off on med/surg will give me a great foundation and I will be able to use all my skills, yet on the other hand I have people telling me that hardly ever do new grads get offered the NICU and I should take that because the offer might not come around again and I could easily get into psych but its hard to get into NICU ....what do you guys think!!! ....some help would be nice ....anyone with experience or any similar situation or advice from experienced nurses!!!!

It is a decision that only you can make. From my understanding it is much easier to get into psych later (at least in my area). NICU has it's own set of skills involved and you can get some good experience. I would go NICU and learn all you can. If you still feel psych is a calling then you can apply for PRN shifts once you are comfortable where you are. Then you get a taste of both worlds. You can use your NICU experiences to make you more marketable in psych later, relating family dynamics you will be involved with and such. Just my 2 cents. Good luck on making your decision.
