the new york state nurses association annual convention will be at the saratoga hilton and the saratoga springs city center in saratoga springs new york, october 8-11, 2009. “new challenges — new opportunities,” is our theme for registered nurses who are ready to move forward in key areas of patient care, public affairs, and professional development.

major speakers include:

anne elizabeth quinn, ms, casac - put your own oxygen mask on first! - learn how to take good care of yourself so you can better care for others.

linda h. aiken, phd, rn, faan, frcn - safe patient handling: what research tell us - learn findings that can improve patient handling practices and prevent injuries to both nurses and patients.

pippa white, jd - into possession of myself - actress/storyteller creates fascinating and surprising drama from the diaries, journals, and letters of florence nightingale, clara barton, and dorothea dix.

other educational topics will include diabetes-obesity, baby boomers retire, legislative issues, hostile behaviors, adoption, compassion fatigue, healthcare reform, generation expectations, organ donation, emotional intelligence, nurse advocacy, nurse documentation, forensic nursing, safe patient handling, legislative advocacy, hiv epidemic, clinical practice and functional practice.

other activities include a fun run/walk, an exhibit hall featuring health-related vendors, an awards ceremony, awards dinner celebration, and a dinner honoring the nurse researcher of the year. the convention also features “labor day,” with activities for nurses represented for collective bargaining. the convention will include a unique session designed for nursing students, as well as countless opportunities to discuss and shape the future of nursing in new york and beyond.
