New RN - Best Shifts

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I am starting an orientation of 8 wks, and I have a 4 days/nights (2:2 days/night OR 3:1) 12 hrs consecutive shifts. I know that 3 days in a row is exhausting already, so as a new registered nurse I was wondering if anyone had orientation of 4 days 12 hrs consecutive shifts? And if so, how did you manage it? Would you prefer it or no?

Personally, I feel as though it may cause me to burn out especially as a new registered nurse with no previous experience in the acute unit. I was just wondering if letting my manager know or discussing my concerns might be deemed as picky/incapable? Should I let her know? If not, why?

Also if I do address my concerns, not really sure how to say it to her without seeming rude...

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hi!

My wife had a very similar orientation period. It may seem like a lot and I forget exactly her schedule. Orientation changes though and for her working in a hospital the first few weeks was discussion, and classroom or workshop based. Once on the floor it was very hands off and observation. towards the middle she began to have hands on experience. It doesnt hurt to voice your concern but I would suggest approaching it as inquiry rather than coming off as apprehensive.
