New nurse manager

Published

I have just accepted a new opportunity to be a nurse manger on a tele floor. This will be my first official managment job. Anyone have any advice or good resources for me to check out? I plan on taking it slow and initially take it all in before creating a plan for change. This is a hospital I have never worked at befor so I need to learn the health system first. I'm nervous, excited and a little scared all at the same time.

First off, congratulations! :) As for advice, perhaps learn what the hospital/unit's culture climate is. I have seen nurse managers come in and do absolutely fabulous changes, while others really rocked the boat and received staff resistance. Same with directors. Perhaps gathering info from other NM at the hospital to see what does and does not work for them? Gain insight from the staff as to what they would like to stay the same/change? Sorry I can't be of more help; I wish you good luck in your new journey :)

Congratulations! Integrate yourself gradually into the unit and solicit opinions from the staff. Take the time to get to know them. Ask your staff what works well? What doesn't work well? Ask them what kinds of initiatives they envision.

In order to successfully initiate any changes, you'll need feeback and buy in from the staff. Good luck!
