Take whatever job you can get especially in those major hospitals (hermann, methodist, childrens, St Lukes) as this puts you in the system there. Now here is the good part, once you have experience you can transfer into what field you like. Once you get there you can ask to go PRN status which means if they need you they will schedule you. You will only get your hours and OT hours if the floor you work on has a lot of needs or has high turnover (I work in the ER for example). PRN status means you get paid ALOT more but you dont get insurance (sucks anyway) or PTO (equates to 3 dollars an hour). Difference is when you work the top tier (it is divided into 3 tiers of hours you agree to work a week) you can make 40-50 dollars an hour. At this rate you can make 100k plus a year if you work 4 days a week and even more if you want to kill the hours and work like a madman/woman. Most of these hospitals still offer 403b matching, and the cost of getting awesome insurance is negligble after you see how much you get paid more an hour. AFTER taxes working 4 nights a week and putting 6% away for 403b matching I make roughly 3600 take home per 2 weeks. Young Nurses expecially with no children you can work this hard and get ahead in life quickly, make use of your youth! I hope this helps someone out there get to where they want to be and still feel great that you are helping those in need!
