new lpn job.whats best? VA long term care or public long term care facility?

Published

I am a new lpn and have a job offer at a VA hospital on the long term care unit or is it better to take the public nursing home lpn position? Any feedback very helpful!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Think about this: with the VA you might not get quite as much salary but the bennies are OUTSTANDING. In the private sector the bennies might be less but you will probably get more cash up front.

Too be honest....I have been in a ltc nursing home for over a year and it is STRESSFUL. Too many patients and not enough workers. As a charge nurse you will become bombarded with physician orders, call lights, paperwork, change of conditions, meetings, family members, pharmacy problems,..... unless you are SUPER organized...you will go crazy. My coworkers are desperate to get out and into a VA or hospital. Soooooo....there's a biased opinion of LTC....I would go with VA plus...benefits ARE better for the VA....

Pick the VA!!! Like someone pointed out above, the benefits are fantastic. Furthermore, you get a GOOD, LENGTHY orientation (I'm speaking from experience). And if you don't like your first unit or co-workers, you can transfer!! The VA was my very first LPN job and it was a great choice. Good luck!
