How do you feel about new graduates being hired into a coronary care unit? In our hospital the coronary care unit and med. surg. ICU are combined. I have worked there for 6 years as a speciality tech. As a speciality tech I am unit secretary, nurse aide, and tele tech. Do you think that this experience makes a differance?

very much so. just knowing how things work, being comfortable talking to and working with patients, knowing how to put the chart togather and enter orders correctly, what paper work needs to be done for this or that like transfering a patient, CT, cardio cath ect...ect... just knowing/being familiar with all that is huge and will allow you to focus on whats going on with the patient and why they are getting this treatment or med. i like working in the CCU and started as a new grad. if you are good and up on your cardio patho no worries just ready the atropine and go for it.

I started a year ago as a new grad in the ACCU-which is CCU/ICU. I love it. I do think that I was helped by my previous experience; in addition to being a CST; I worked all over the hospital where I am now as a tech/secretary. It gave me a head start-I knew about the paperwork, the phones, I could interpret EKGs; I knew how things were done and when/why; the staff the docs and how to work with them, the general atsmophere of working in a hospital, etc etc; not to mention basic stuff like terminology. If you are thinking of working where you have been a tech for six years, you likely be able to pass by many issues new people deal with-getting used to the unit, where stuff is, how things are done there vs. what you learned in school, who's who; who's gossipy and who's not; oh-just so much. You'll be able to focus on learning nursing there and not all the extraneous stuff. The only thing that is weird is that one day you are a tech, and the next day you're a nurse. I'd say go for it. Good luck.
LOL-a year ago I wouldn't of gotten that; now I really do!
