New grad trying to find a job in Greater Vancouver area

Published

Hi,

I'm a new grad RN who is having trouble finding a job in BC (particularly the lower mainland area). I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on applying with Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health. Did you hear anything back from online applications, or did you apply in person?

I'd appreciate any tips/success stories.

They are cutting down on beds in the units so it might be a bit hard. Keep applying especially around smaller hospitals. I will give you a tip: around the Fraser Valley, "M" hospital is almost always short and is a good place for new grads to get their foot in the door..

Specializes in geriatrics.

You are not alone. Unless you have had a placement on a unit, you will likely need to accept casual work. There are few jobs for new and experienced nurses due to ongoing budget cuts.

Consider relocating to a small town if you're able. Small towns often need nurses.

Try the New Grad programs the health authorities offer...they are separate applications.

Usually getting hired where you had your preceptorship is a good bet. If they weren't hiring initially, try again in a couple months.

Otherwise I'd try hospitals further out of town...like in the Fraser Valley

good luck!

Thanks for your responses! I just got hired with Vancouver Coastal Health, and I got that job by contacting the manager of the unit directly, not through online applications. My advice for any new grads looking for a position - don't rely on online applications, as they got me nowhere. Call, email, or drop off your resume in person!
