Hello allnurses!
I am a new graduate of an ASN program in the Midwest and have moved back home to the Sacramento region. I am currently completing coursework towards my BSN. I have been struggling finding a hospital position after applying all around the area. It has been a couple months now with no requests for an interview. Am I alone in this struggle to find hospital employment during a “nursing shortage?”

I was a new grad last year looking for a job in Sacramento and it took me 4 months without a single interview before I got a call back. It’s one of the highest (if not THE highest) paid locations when factoring in cost of living. So the hospitals aren’t going to pay for training a new grad if they can get a more experienced nurse. It took knowing someone who got me an interview to get my first job. I couldn’t even get call backs from SNF’s. The SNF’s here pay more than some acute care RN’s make elsewhere, so everyone moves here. If you know people here, try to get your foot in the door that way. Otherwise, keep throwing your resume to as many places as you can. Also, you may have to travel a bit. Stockton, Yuba, Oroville, Woodland, Placerville, Auburn, Lodi, Sutter, and Vacaville might all be places for you to start. Good luck on your search. You will find something eventually!
