New Grad Residency

Published

Hi Everyone,

I am not ready to apply to a new grad residency program yet. But it is always in the back of my mind. As I am going through nursing school, what can I do to improve my resume to be competitive to apply to the top residency programs?

Of course, keep my grades up. What about joining my local CNSA and running for a board position? Or writing an op-ed? I am looking at externships too... Any other ideas? It is my dream to go to a big time residency program. Thanks everyone! Best, Meredith.

An externship was the BEST decision I ever made! I got accepted into one that is one of the best in my area (I have no idea how or why - I got rejected from the other 5 I applied to) and I ended up learning more and gaining more experience during that 12-week summer program than I have the past 3 years of school. Plus I made many connections and ended up getting an aide job there too. I also work as a secretary in another hospital. ALL of these are good options. Any foot you can get in the door and any connections you can make are your best option! That's how many people are landing jobs now. However, running for leadership positions and getting involved are WONDERFUL too. :)
