New Grad Program/RN Residency for ICU

Published

Hey guys!

I'm about to graduate with my BSN and considering where to apply for jobs. I want to work in an ICU (ultimate goal = CRNA and need ICU experience), but I'm wondering if it is possible to work in an ICU without going through a new grad program/residency. I know that no matter what, I will have an orientation (and thank goodness for that!), but I'm wondering if I am limited only to hospitals with new grad programs, or if it might be worth applying more broadly (would they even consider me, or would it be a waste of my time to go through the application process?).

Thanks for the feedback!

You will likely not even be considered for an ICU position unless it is through a RN Intern/Grad program.

Sure, it doesn't hurt to apply... but don't count on it.

If you do not find the position you prefer I suggest applying for a telemetry floor, and get your 1 year of experience in. They're more likely to accept new grads, and having 1 year of tele experience will help you gain your skills and confidence as new nurse. Then after your 1 year, apply for specialty.

Good Luck!

I know people who have landed F/T jobs in ICU out of school. Apply to every hospital you can see yourself commuting to... Also apply to lower acuity areas with the goal of moving into higher acuity within 1 - 1.5 years.

It's possible. A friend of mine got hired in to a big name North Carolina ICU before we even graduated. She was one of the top 3 of our class and worked hard for it.
