New grad position in a urology clinic - good idea?

Specialties Urology

Published

Hi everyone,

I am a BSN nursing student graduating in June. Just like all soon to be grads in my area, jobs are hard to come by. I have applied to every intern postition and many CNA jobs as well without any luck. I recently had a clinical rotation in a very large urology clinic with a one day surgery center, MRI, rad, PT, etc. I had a really great experience there and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. By the conversations I had with my clinical instructor, I think they would consider hiring me if I applied. Will I get the kind of experience I need as a new grad working in a clinic setting as opposed to acute care? Here are a few of my pros and cons as I see them.

Pros:

A JOB!

Great company

Lots of teaching opportunities

Returning patients to get to know

Cons:

Mostly MA's, 2 RN's and only one BSN

No acute care

8 x 5 shifts

Thanks for any input!

I'm sure that you have already made a decision by now as it is almost 2 months since you posted this, but I think that if jobs are hard to come by as a new grad, a urology clinic is not the worse place you could start out. I had to start out in a pediatric clinic when I graduated from nursing school 2 years ago and then after just over a year, I decided I needed more because I felt like I was losing my skills so I got hired as a float nurse at a large practice of specialty clinics, urgent care and primary care. I learned so much in just 6 months and then just got hired on as a urology nurse and I absolutely love it. I feel like I have learned so much and have the potential to learn so much more just from this specialty alone. Even though it is a specialty, I feel like it's one specialty that you would use your skills and knowledge from throughout your nursing career wherever you go. And just remember, just because you're taking this job as a new grad, it does not mean you have to be there forever. At least a year would be a great start, but that's the awesome thing about nursing. There is so much opportunity! Good luck to you!
