New Grad looking for perinatal internship

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hi, I am a new grad (December actually) with 20 years lpn experience.

I want to cross train labor and delivery, mother baby, I want to do it all!

Willing to go almost anywhere. Please give me ideas where to look for internship!

Thanks,

Peggy

In your last semester in Nursing school did you do a seionr preceptorship in L&D or Mother/Baby? If so start with talking with the hospital you were at. I got an L&D training position right out of nursing school at one of the hospitals I precepted at in my senior rotation. (I made it know to almost everyone I met that I wanted an L&D position. One of the social workers introduced me to the L&D nurse educator and I kept persisiting and got an interview and was hired)

Another idea would be to try to get into a teaching hospital as they seem more willing to train new grads and re-entry nurses in specialty areas.

Personally if I had to do it all over again I would have started off at a teaching hospital because it is important to have the best learning experience posssible and a teaching hospital is geared towards training physicians and nurses. In a smaller community hosptial (in my experience) most of the physician's are set in their ways and don't buy into training nurses in a specialty area and this creates a situation that is not as conducive to learning and you also may be the only new grad that they are training in that area and would miss out on new grad support groups where there are other new grads training in your specialty if you were at a larger teaching hospital.

I hope this is helpful and good luck to you.
