New Grad Job Interview L/D

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Specializes in Current Higher Ed RN and Part-time OB L+D.

I graduated a year ago, took my NCLEX this April, passed and now am searching for jobs. I have worked as a tech in an ICU for 2 years and have a former 18 year career in advertising before going back to school for nursing after I had my daughter. This week is an L/D interview I would LOVVVVVVVE to have. I'm just nervous as to what the nurse manager is going to ask. I don't know how to explain my year to take the exam (I failed twice), so some of those are making me nervous. I've interviewed for an ICU job before and was rejected. I just want to prepare, show my enthusiasm, because I will be competing with some experienced nurses as well. Any help???

Why L and D, biggest mistake you ever made, have you witnessed a breach in confidentiality and what did you do about it....you tube empowerRN interview tips, I wasn't asked any knowledge based questions as mine was a new grad rn position, google how to answer tell me about yourself question and bring extra portfolios for multiple person interviews.

Specializes in Critical Care, Postpartum.

Every New Grad RN position is different everywhere, because I had a wake up call when I interviewed and WAS asked knowledge based questions. I was a career changer and was able to work in my previous experience in a non-nursing field to nursing. One example was my strong communication skills.

I know one manager told me that one of her top nurses on the unit failed the NCLEX multiple times, so don't be dismayed over it. Some questions I got asked was: How do you handle stress; What would you do if you didn't agree with an MD's orders?; How would you handle conflict between coworkers? Many of the answers dealt with going through chain of command.

Have extra copies of resumes and license and other certs you may have already obtained prior.

I was asked some basic questions, the first being "tell me about yourself" this is in my opinion where they figure out what type of person you are. I usually talk about my schooling, academic accomplishments and about my jobs during nursing school and after. I just landed a job in L&D and I am considered a new grad. I have been working in an outpatient clinic for the past 5 months so I did not have any acute care or OBGYN experience. Good luck to you and I think as long as you show who you really are and that your passionate about helping people you will succeed. I also have to agree with Calrodeogirl the EmpowRN videos on youtube are great especially her interview tips video it is a little long but def worth watching.
