I think 8 weeks is plenty to hone in on IV insertion skills. If they're that desperate then at the end of the training period, if you don't feel ready, I would simply ask for more training days. If you're part of the IV team, it sounds like that's strictly what your job would be but I would definitely clarify what exactly your role would be.

I am a new nurse. I currently work in a family medicine practice and have been seeking and opportunity to work in position that would challenge me. I have been approached by my former employer who has offered me the opportunity to interview for a position in the hospital as pert of the IV therapy team. They are willing to train on the job for this position. They are aware I am a new nurse. Here is my question. They have told me they would train me for 8 weeks then I would be "on my own" (no overlap in team nurse civerage) .Does this seem adequate as I have 1) never worked in a hospital as a nurse and 2) have absolutely no IV experience (other than in school lab) and have never even done phlebotomy? Is this a safe/ adequate amount of training? I question this because the manager has told me they have had this position open for a year and they are desperate. I am excited (also nervous) they have offered me the opportunity but I am worried about failure to perform the job responsibilities safely given the short amount of training time and lack of support following the training? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
