new grad interview

Published

Hi everyone,

I am new to allnurses.com and i have a question.

I am a brand new nurse, just graduated with my BSN. I have been given the opportunity to interview for a new grad program in the operating room. I am ver fortunate to even have this opportunity and do NOT want to blow it.

I have always been interested in the operating room, but I dont have any experience with it. In nursing school we did observational experiences, but i never got put in the OR, I tried to switch with classmates but i didnt get a chance to. I know a plastic surgeon who let me come to a hospital with him one time and i saw a very very minor surgery. I liked the atmosphere of it and I like the fact that you are focusing on one patient at a time, and i also like the fast pace and excitement that can occur in the OR.

I am wondering if anyone knows any OR specific questions that I might be asked on this interview? Also if any one knows what a nurse manager might want to hear from someone who hasnt really spent a lot of time in the OR.

Im very nervous for this interview and i just want to be prepared, any advice would be great! Thanks

Hi,

did you ever get any advice? How'd your interview go? I am hoping to be in your shoes come June. I just finished a 6 week clinical in the OR, hoping to get my practicum there too. What questions did they ask you in the interview? Were you happy with how you did? What advice can you offer a future fellow OR nurse? :) thanks!!

Hey! Thats awesome that you had an entire clinical in the OR. I feel like having that and being able to talk about diffrent situations you have seen in the setting is always good for an inteview, which is why I was struggling so mcuh without having any expereience with it.

So I only got this interview because a friend of a friend set it up for me. Its for a training program and she still has some other people to interview. She didnt ask me any questions though so I have no idea what to think. When I first got there she asked why I was interested in the OR and gave her a brief answer. I feel like I would have talked a bit more if i knew that was going to be my only chance. After that she just talked to me for about 10 minutes about hwot he program is run and then sent me on a tour with another nurse.

So I have no idea how the decision will be made considering I wasnt asked any questions! Not sure what to make of it...

Huh. Not sure what to think either. Maybe thats just her style. What was your answer when she asked the one question? Is there more than one spot available in the program? And how many people applied for it? Perhaps you are already a shoe-in because there are 8 spots and 8 people applied, and the interview was just a formality to make sure you're not a serial killer. That doesn't sound likely iin this economy where there are hundreds up for each program but you never know...what part of the country are you in? I'm sure you did great. when do you find out?:yeah:

so found out i am going in for a second interview with someone else and having an observation day. i bet thats when the questions will come! so i guess that cant be a bad sign at least! i just answered the question with what i had posted earlier, about wanting to be in a fast paced environment and how i like to be busy and i think the OR is the kind of place that keeps you on your toes. and also that i can focus all of my attention on one patient at a time.

but definately not a shoe in since she told me there were a couple spots and she has about 10 more people to ineterview soo i don tknow how many exactly were being interviewed.

ill keep you posted though!

yay!! thats a really good sign!!! :yeah: YES, please do keep me posted!!! what exactly is the observation day about?

just a day to go in and shadow a nurse and see how everything works i guess.

Can I ask where you are interviewing? I graduate next May and want to be in the OR and am looking for hospitals that accept new grads in the OR.

Thanks!
