New Grad Advice

Published

Hello,

I am a new BSN grad that just moved here from out of state. I passed the NCLEX earlier this month and have started looking for jobs, and attended the Spectrum Career Fair last Friday. So far I have not had much luck and was wondering if any recently hired new grads had any advice.

Thanks.

HI!

I am a new grad with my BSN, I just graduated in Sept. 2009. I started applying in AUgust. Applying to jobs is like a game: you have to give yourself so many opportunities. This is what I did: First, create an excel sheet so you could keep track of the date, place, and position you are applying for. Also add in a row for little side notes, if you got a call back, and if you scheduled and interview.

After that I applied directly online at various hospital websites, went to many career fairs, and craigs list is a plus. I also talked to people who knew people to spread the word that I was looking for a job.

You have to be very patient. When you go on interviews prepare well! Research the hospital and know that it is all about (like when it was founded, the programs they have, awards they gained, etc). Employers tend to ask "so, what can you tell me about this hospital?" and you MUST be prepared! Also, when you come out of the interview send a thank you email and don't stalk them the next day! Give them at least a week to find out about the status of your application.

Through craigs list, I found a home care job, and after 5 interviews I landed a job at the hospital. I would apply to about 25 jobs a day, get 2 calls backs if I was lucky, and at least have an interview. I went on at least 10 interviews before I landed my hospital job.

Good Luck!!!:yeah:
