New bill may make California NPs independent providers

Published

Senate bill 491, recently passed by the California senate, would allow NPs to practice without supervision by an MD. The bill passed with the bare minimum number of required votes and now moves to the House for review. Not surprisingly, the AMA is against the bill, claiming (among other things) that NPs would over-prescribe narcotics and refer to specialists too often.

For those following this, do you think the bill will pass? And, if so, do you think that it will be so heavily amended as to be meaningless?
