Neurosurg Private Practice Salary negotiation

Specialties NP

Hello,

I am a FNP and have been working in neurosurgery for the past year and a half. I recently received my certfication as a RNFA. I currently work for a neurosurgery group of 9 neurosurgeons along with 2 PAs and 1 other NP in a large non-profit hospital. I manage inpatients, see patients in clinic, act as first assistant in the OR, and monitor clinical trial patients. One of the neurosurgeons that works in our group is leaving to start a private practice in a hospital 30 miles East. He was asked by a medical group to start a new Neuroscience program and his projected volume is 1000 cases/year. I am considering making the move and joining him. We will basically be starting this practice from scratch. He asked me how much I should be paid to start and I suggested $50/hr plus a cut of what I bill (clinic visits and first assistant billing).

Would this be a good starting salary and what would be an appropriate percentage of billing to ask for? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Is he going to pay your malpractice and what type of malpractice is it? You are wearing many hats and should be compensated accordingly. $50/hour is way too low in my opinion. Staff RNs make that. Good luck.

Is he paying for your health benefits? Or are you responsible for paynig for it? Be sure take into account health insurance, (medical and dental), and . Are you going to be paid under a W-2 or as an independent contractor? If the latter, you need to pay your own social security taxes. $50/hr is low INHO. What city/state are you talking about? Things to think about.

Depends on the specifics of the "cut of what (you) bill". The other posters don't think it's much but hell most NPs make $70K/year and just the $50/hr wage will make you more than $100K/yr if you work at least 40 hrs/week. If you get any part of what you bill I'd say that's gravy on good pay.

I would say as a base rate alone, that seems to be very generous. You don't want to price yourself so high that he suddenly start's wondering why he's paying you 50% more than the going wage. Not much more than that and he can get an MD (Family practice, or more likely Neurologist or Psyiatrist(sp))

Since you don't mention exactly what kind of work you'll be performing, its a hard to estimate what or how you should ask for additional compensation.
