nervous new er nurse

Published

Hi, I'm a brand new ER nurse starting out in a busy trauma 1 inner-city hospital. So far, I've been told I'm doing good, and I will be off orientation and on my own in 2 weeks. The problem is I am always nervous! I have rarely had anxiety in any other aspect of my life, but nursing care in general makes me so nervous, even throughout nursing school. I feel anxious the whole time I'm at work, and I feel anxious when I'm not at work, just thinking about going back to work. It's extremely fast paced, and even the experienced nurses on the floor tell me that you're pretty much always feeling behind. I've debated going to another area of the hospital where it isn't quite as fast-paced, but I really don't want to be a quitter, and the ER is so interesting and I feel that I may be able to enjoy myself if I get over my nerves! Basically, I just want to hear from someone with this sort of experience. Do you think I wil get over my anxiety with experience, or is this a sign that I need to go somewhere else where I'll feel more comfortable? Some days I feel like I could really enjoy it, and other days I just don't feel like I can cut it!
