Tricia1 wanted me to give suggestions on negotiating a salary. I have no nursing experience, I'm a student but I am 31 yo, and I have managed to be fairly successful considering I have no formal education. My sugestions for negotiating are to be confident, know what your prospective job entails, include any ancillaries (travel time, parking, wear & tear, hours, etc) research the position using a site like Salary Wizard from Nurse Week (http://www.nurseweek.com/salary/).
You don't discuss salary during the interview process. If the interviewer pushes the subject give them a range you're willing to work with but let them know you are flexible and more interested in learning more about the job before you make any commitment.
I normally give a 5-7 thousand range for my salary. If they lowball you show your disappointment; let them know you're disappointed; have your poker face ready! Don't forget experience & education count for a lot and depending on the field you're in there may be lots of competetion or they may agree to almost any terms you set becuase they need you. Most importantlyu you must know your worth. If you can't convey your value, no one is going to write you a blank check!
