Need input from nurse manager for a nursing school interview project

Published

Hello to everyone who works in nursing management:

I am a RN who is currently unemployed because I am back in school getting my BSN. We have a project which we have to interview a nurse manager regarding responsibilities and challenges of their work. The nurse manager I used to work for had retired and I couldn't find anyone else to interview in person. So I am asking for help from a community where I received a lot of beneficial information. There are 12 questions, and I would be grateful if any of you could help me with them.

  1. What is the role of the nurse manager on your unit?
  2. How many people does he/she supervise?
  3. Whom do they answer to? What is the organizational structure of your institution?
  4. Describe a typical schedule for one of their weeks at work.
  5. What organizational and management skills did he/she utilize over the course of the day you were with her?
  6. What was his/her management or leadership style? Describe why they think that is their style.
  7. Give an example of how they utilized this style to accomplish a needed change on the unit.
  8. What barriers to change did they have to overcome to make the change?
  9. What resources did they have to facilitate the change?
  10. What challenges or issues arose on that day that required intervention?
  11. What do they feel are their strengths are as a manager? Are there any weaknesses?
  12. Would you like their job? Why or why not?
