Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am in my last semester of RN school. We have to do a group project for Prof. Roles/Development. We are having a tough time picking a topic. I wanted to do the nurses's role in organ donation, but after speaking with the SICU charge RN today, there doesn't seem to be one besides support. Don't get me wrong, it is important, but how do you make an entire presentation, paper and board out of it. KWIM?

What would you do?

I put this in the student forum, but need more options. What would you choose to do?

Nurses play a much more important role in organ donation than you give them credit for. I've never worked in that specialty, but I know that critical care nurses and operating room nurses have a huge role in coordinating transplants. Review Richard Arbour's AACN (Dec 2005) article on managing organ donations - and "support" shouldn't be minimized. In hospitals, advance practice nurses are often responsible for coordinating hospital resources (pastoral, legal, ethic's committees, physician) when organ donation questions arise. Many medical centers employ nurses to coordinate organ donation programs - you presentation can discuss what that all entails. The recent Duke University sentinel event case where an ABO incompatible organ was transplanted into a pediatric patient shows how important nurses can be in developing safe organ transplant/donation programs. Its a very interesting and full topic. Just have to visit OVID.
