Last week my father died in his sleep and my mother is uneducated and cannot guide me. I need a bit of guidance on applying to a nursing school. Can someone kindly guide me. Thanks. I am a 17 year old girl going to high school in Michigan (Livonia and want to become a nurse. I searched the internet and it is very confusing how to proceed. My GPA is 3.25 and ACT is 21. My mother cannot afford to send me to school but I badly want to be a nurse. Which would be the easiest school (s) for me to get into. Is student mean based aid easy to obtain..

Oh honey ~ I am so... sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. Just hearing that you are 17 and asking for advise leads me to the belief that you are a very smart young lady who is going to go far. Before I can offer up my opinion I need some additional information. Will transportation to and from classes be an issue for you? That is a biggie believe it or not. Do you think it will be in your best interest to live with your Mom and concentrate FULLY on your studies? Will you have to work part time? If you can share those answers that may shed some more light so others can pass on their thoughts to you.

Thank you very much for your kind words. My father's car is still with us. Upto now since we could not afford a car for me I did not ask for one. But since we have a car I will learn to drive before I graduate from high school (next may). I would like to continue living with my mother to be of moral support since she is totally devastated.

Well, the way I see it you have 2 choices: You can attend a local community college and work towards a ADN degree and live at home with your mom OR you can find away to go to university and live in a dorm. I am in my 40's and am returning to the cc to "hopefullY" get into the nursing program and my daughter is a sophomore at SVSU trying to get into their nursing program. Please note that EITHER way you will have to get all A's in EVERY class to make it in.

It doesn't matter where you go in Michigan it is HIGHLY COMPETITIVE to get into a RN (Adn or Bsn) program. Please be real about what you are going to have to put into it to be successful! I would highly suggest finding the best guidance counselor at your school to help or if you don't have one there find someone that is older, wise about college matters and experienced with the nursing profession that can guide you. This is critical. Show them your posts here and any answers you may receive.

If you have any othe questions please just ask. Again, my very best to you as you forge ahead on your life's journey. Keep asking questions from knowledgable people and surround yourself with smart friends who will succeed in life!
