This really depends on the type of patient situation... For instance, a patient needing orthopedic surgery will be place on a prophylactic antibiotic (usually Ancef) immediately preop and then postsurgically to help prevent infection from occurring in the bone or wound site. A laboring patient with unknown GBS (group Beta Strep) status will be placed on a prophylactic antibiotic such as Ampicillin or Clindamycin (if allergic to PCN class) to help prevent sepsis neonatorum (sepsis in the baby). Sickle cell patients or dialysis patients will often be given IV vancomycin before an invasive procedure to help prevent sepsis. Patients with heart valve abnormalities/ replacements or congenital heart defects will also require prophylactic antibiotics before any invasive procedures, after scrapes/ minor injuries, or with dental procedures (this is to prevent endocarditis). Hope this helps :)
