Need Advice!!!

Hi,

I'm new to the board but I'm am familiar with it. I have been coming to the board for a few weeks and looking at the posts because I would like to become a NICU Nurse when I get out of college. I am a junior in high school and I make good grades (A's and B's) in all of my classes. I really want to go to school and become a nurse but the truth is I am scared. In my senior year in high school, I plan to take a CNA class that they offer now to get a feeling of nursing. I know that nursing is something I really want to do. Can anyone offer any kind of advice?!!!

A CNA course is a good idea, and will help you to see certain aspects of healthcare that you would not see as an "outsider".

I think your best bet in high school is to take all of the math, science and social science (growth and development, psychology) you possibly can. You will need algebra, biology, chemistry, microbiology (study of micro-organisms like bacteria and viruses) and anatomy and physiology (study of the structure and function of the human body) in college. The more background you have in these subjects in H.S., the easier they will be in college. Most nursing programs require you to take basic math and science courses before you are accepted to the nursing program, so getting good grades in these courses in college is imperative.

Offer to volunteer at your local hospital, health department or nursing home. Share your interests with your pediatrician, family doctor or nurse. They may be able to recommend local mentoring programs that pair you up with a healthcare professional.

Thanks for the advice Jolie! I have talked to my guidance counselor about my schedule for next year and I have an Advanced math or Calculus class and a Biology II class on my schedule for next school year. Hopefully after I get certified to be a CNA I could get a job or be a volunteer at a hospital. *Crosses fingers*:)
