my father was just diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (hocm) a couple days ago. he is most likely coming home from the hospital later today. he was diagnosed with diabetes a little over a year ago and has been taking lantus insulin at nighttime for about a year.
i don't know what to cook for him anymore! now i'm worried about what is safe for him to eat since we are now dealing with both diabetes and cardiomyopathy. he is 59 years old and he also has hypertension.
in the hospital his meal trays have been the 1800 cal ada (carb controlled) cardiac diet. i don't know how to cook that way at home! don't know what to buy him anymore at the grocery store or what recipes to follow. i'm more concerned about what he can not eat anymore, what foods he must avoid.
any advice or suggestions? i'd appreciate cookbook recommendations, nutritional website recommendations, online support group recommendations, etc.
yes, i know the obvious, my dad really needs to consult with a nutritionist. an appointment with a registered dietician is needed, i've been begging him to go for a year now!
