Need some advice ABSN vs ADN

Published

Hello everyone, I need some much needed advice on routes I can take to become a nurse.

I have a bachelors in Science and have most of my pre-reqs done for an ABSN program in the Cincinnati area. I also decided to go to Optometry school after I did my undergrad and unfortunately was dismissed due to poor academic performance. This led to a denial of admission from one of the accelerated programs I applied to. I know that my denial of admission was because of the dismissal on my record, I am waiting to hear back from another school that I got an interview with and I am nervous that I may be denied from there as well for the same reason.

I know that I want to do nursing, in the experience of Optometry school I realized I wanted to be a nurse instead of an Optometrist (I was debating between the 2 fields before I entered Optometry school).

Any advice on this matter? The fact that I got kicked out of Optometry school is unfortunately a red flag on my record even though I have learned a lot from my experiences and know that I can succeed and how to do things differently. I was looking into getting an associates then doing an RN-BSN program. However I think that will take a lot of time since many ADN programs take 2-3 years. I do not want to spend the next 4 years getting a bachelors degree but I do not know what to do if I get denied from the accelerated program I am waiting to hear on.

I did go to Fortis College today and they said that I can get through the program quicker if my credits from my bachelor's degree transfer which I am confident most will. However, I have seen plenty of review online that Fortis is not a school you want to go to if you want to get hired :scrying:.

Thank you all for your advice in advance and I look forward to hearing more from you all!

You should avoid Fortis imo, it is a for-profit school and their priority is milking as much money out of you and the US government as possible. I havn't heard too many success stories of friends that have attended schools like Fortis, ECPI, etc. If i were in your shoes i would attempt to enroll in the ABSN program since you currently have a bachelors in science being that several hospitals in my area require nurses to have a BSN just for an interview,

I have applied to ABSN programs in my area and I am waiting on a response from one. I am just trying to find out another route if that does not happen to work out.

Union University in Nashville, Jackson, and Memphis TN only counts your last 60 hrs of course work and I believe that as long as you were not dismissed from a school of nursing I don't believe it would be held against you
