NAVY reserves for a nurse. questions....

Nurses Career Support

Specializes in ER.

I am looking to apply as an officer of the Navy reserves. I have just started as an ER nurse, and want to apply but I have some questions. There was someone named "LCDR Dan" doing a great job answering questions regarding this topic.

How do I tell me manager I am applying? I know she can't fire me, but I have to tell her I'll miss two weeks of work a year, and I don't know how she'll react.

Also, I don't want to randomly get deployed and then my manager at my civilian job is frustrated because I'm messing up the schedule. (Let me rephrase that-- I would LOVE to get deployed, I DON'T want to upset my manager or make things difficult for my civilian co-workers and leadership).

I generally don't know what to expect if I apply and they accept me. What will my training be like? My recruiter mentioned that I'd be doing more "supervising" of the ER, like in a leadership position. That sounds great but how will I be trained if I'm only gone those two weeks in the summer? Is that when I'll learn everything?

Do you think it's too early in my career to be doing this? I've been a nurse (RN BSN) for literally a month.

Anyone with military experience or knowledge please respond-- thank you so much!
