National Guard as 91D

I was in the AIR Guard and Reserves. 17 years. As a medical unit Administrator. Am now BSN/RN.

I was deployed once. To Virginia to backfill a medical unit there in 1990.

I'd join again in a heartbeat.

The best thing I ever did in my life. In fact, I am thinking about going back in so I can pick up time to retire from it as a nurse.

I'd only go Navy or Air Force...however Army is offering alot of money now days - and going "over there" is fairly safe for medical nurse types.

Hello,
I was considering joining the National Guard as a 91D. Basic training would start in Jan for 9 weeks and then 19 weeks for IT.
What are the chances of being called to Iraq? I just want an idea that comes from someone other than recruiter. All they say is there is a chance. I know there is a chance and if I am going to do this, I would like to know what those chances are so I can discuss it with my family.
Also, give some opinions of what you think about this option.

My son is a 91D in the USAR and his Unit was mobilized [activated] to Iraq. However, right before his Unit got the "word" my son was accepted into the University of Houston Army ROTC program, thus he was exempt from being mobilized. Not sure about 91D activity in the NG in regard to be mobilized. It does seem like the NG gets mob'd more frequently than the USAR. My USAR Unit supposedly backfills BAMC, yet 190 soldiers were mob'd a year ago and none went to BAMC. However, I think less than 50 went OCONUS.

Be advised, before you do go back in on a direct commission in the ANC you need to clarify the number of years served as an enlisted, then figure out if in fact you will be able to retire with officer pay down the road. You need to have finished your military career with more years served as an officer in order to retire with officer pay.
